Why You Need to Purchase Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured Motorist coverage

More than one in five Florida drivers are on the roads without insurance, according to a new study by the Insurance Research Council. Not a shock, but Florida was the sixth-worst state in the nation for uninsured motorists with a rate of 20.4% driving unprotected. The national average was 12.9%.

To make matters worse even if a person has automobile insurance, Florida only requires Personal Injury Protection “P.I.P.” and Property Damage Liability “P.D.” coverage in order to register a vehicle. Unfortunately, there is no present requirement that motor vehicle owners or drivers here carry Bodily Injury liability “B.I.” coverage under their auto policy. That means should you suffer injuries as the result of someone else’s negligence in an accident, you won’t be able to collect anything for your pain and suffering and or other damages. The best case scenario, they’ll only have to fix your car; worst case you’ll get nothing.

Florida drivers should purchase uninsured/under insured motorist  coverage “U.M.”. It acts as protection if are injured in a crash that was not your fault and either the other side had no insurance at all or only purchased the bare minimum. Electing to add this additional U.M. to your policy is extremely important as it can be used to cover past and future medical expenses/lost wages along with providing compensation for non-economic damages such as disability, pain and suffering, and the loss of ability for enjoyment of life. The premise behind using this type of insurance is to make the injured party ”whole” since the at fault parties could not compensate them fully.
