3M Earplugs Cause Hearing Loss for Military Service Members

What Are 3M Combat Arms Earplugs?

The company manufactured these dual-ended earplugs for hearing protection from close range firearms and noises from battlefield conditions. Due to their defective design, the earplugs can slightly loosen and subtly move out of the ear canal just enough for the loud sounds to cause hearing damage. According to reports, they knew about these issues, but knowingly sold them to the U.S. military from 2000-2015. What’s worse, they failed to warn the government and our brave soldiers!

What Risks Are Associated With Their Use?

Common injuries include unilateral and bilateral hearing loss, tinnitus (or ringing in the ears), permanent hearing damage and or deafness.

Damages:

In July 2018, the 3M corporation agreed to pay $9.1 million to the U.S. government for knowingly suppling the military with defective earplugs. Since 2019, verdicts have exceeded $300 million dollars on behalf of the injured personnel. They have encompassed 16 trials with the “The Good Guys” (U.S. military) winning 13 out of 19 cases for a whopping 68.4% success rate! To pull a fast one, 3M filed for bankruptcy to avoid further liability which the judge rightfully denied.
