Three Tragic Workplace Fatalities

An employee may require assistance from a qualified South Florida Workers’ Compensation lawyer unexpectedly. Today, despite the development of extensive job safety regulations designed to prevent accidents on the job, tragic injuries or even fatalities still sometimes happen at work sites. When these types of events occur, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (better known as O.S.H.A.), opened an investigation to ascertain whether or not an employer complied fully with its regulations:

Three Worker Deaths in Key Largo

For example, a recent news item from Key Largo reported by a Key Largo Workers’ Compensation website indicated that O.S.H.A. had investigated the deaths of three employees who died suddenly at a job site on January 16, 2017. The workers, a 34-year old pipe layer,

a 49-year old laborer and a 24-year old equipment operator, all died after entering a manhole that contained toxic gases. Tests later revealed the confined space contained dangerously high levels of hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide. When one worker collapsed from the fumes, the others separately attempted to rescue him and each in turn fell victim to the poisonous gases. Two of their co-workers and a volunteer firefighter sustained injuries during rescue attempts at the site.

When job-related injuries or deaths occur in Coral Springs and or other Florida communities, consulting with a South Florida Workers’ Compensation lawyer will help you safeguard the rights of the worker and or their family. The tragedy in Key Largo prompted O.S.H.A. to cite and fine Douglas N. Higgins, Inc. and its contracting company, McKenna Contracting LLC, for  serious job site safety violations. In fact in some instances, a Stop Work Order could be entered by the State of Florida to close a business down until it is deemed safe. Accordingly, it is vital for employees in Florida to realize work-related injuries or deaths may happen unexpectedly, even in occupations typically involving limited safety risks.
